It is possible to have a Windows machines in a Skolelinux network. Samba software suite makes it easy to connect to Windows computers in a computer network with Skolelinux. See Skolelinux manual for more information. Note that the Windows machines should participate in a Skolelinux network and not vice versa.
Do I need to have a lot of IT expertise?
Definitely not. Skolelinux aims to be simple to install and simple to operate. Skolelinux is a complete customized network solutions for schools, this makes it a very good option. There are professional developers in collaboration with schools that have thought through how the services should be set up, and all of this is collected in a package that is very easy to install. With the option Windows or other Linux distributions as "Fedora" for that matter, should all this be done manually, and it requires a lot of IT expertise!
What is a thin client?
A thin client is a computer with monitor, keyboard and mouse and displays the image of the applications running on a "thin client server". Nothing is installed on the thin client. Thin client needs not be a powerful machine. A Pentium 133 MHz and a network adapter with PXE boot (Preboot execution environment) should go smoothly.
One of the benefits of thin clients, is that you can re-use mature fully usable computers. These are machines that would otherwise have to dispose of if you should run the latest software on Windows. Equally important is the fact that thin clients provide easier operation. Lifetime costs can be reduced by 60% writes Teleplan in a study of Trade and Industry Ministry.
What is Skolelinux "sore toe"?
Skolelinux biggest problem is beyond what we are able to do something with. Some private companies are developing solutions that break with open standards. They assume that schools have a customer relationship with a single supplier. Skolelinux has written letters to these companies with incentives of the storage application that works on Macintosh, FreeBSD and Linux. We encourage companies to follow open standards. School leaders tell us that they have stopped using products from such companies that are trying to decide what kind of computer system schools use. A County School manager has complained to the Learning Center. We note that the Technology Council and the Competition Authority believes the same as Skolelinux in this area.
